What is MEP?

mise en place | French | noun: [in a professional kitchen] the preparation of dishes and ingredients before the beginning of service.

Mise En Place is not just a brand name, it literally means “put in place” or the correct preparation of ingredients and instruments before service.

Smart, clean mise en place makes the difference between a good meal and a great meal.

Philosophy

We believe that a restaurant is not just a place where you sit down and order food. It’s a safe, creative space where intelligent preparation and attention to detail brings genuine happiness to customers. We want to create that space in your home.

History

Roman philosopher Seneca said that luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity. MEP is what happened when chef Danny Smiles’ plans of opening a Roman-inspired osteria were disrupted by a global pandemic—he turned it into an opportunity to create something truly new and unique.

Born out of unprecedented economic and social change, MEP is a meal kit and delivery service that blurs the line between the home kitchen and restaurant kitchen. We’ve reverse engineered the dining experience and stripped it down to its bare bones: good ingredients, clean prep, simple recipes, and artful presentation. The service industry is evolving quickly and we want to be on the front lines of that change.

The planet comes first.

Carbon emissions, toxic packaging, and food waste have become synonymous with food delivery. We’re changing that. Every MEP meal, ingredient, and product is packaged in reusable containers, cotton bags, compostable materials, or glass containers, with no plastic in sight. Every ingredient is chosen seasonally and sustainably and portioned to minimize food waste. Every delivery is made via bicycle or electric vehicles. Zero emissions and zero waste.

Cooking is learning.

Every dish is a chance to learn about a technique, an ingredient, a culture. Even the most novice home cook can have fun if they are inspired and that’s where we come in. We’ve designed simple but delicious recipes geared towards enjoyment and normal household hardware—no Vitamix or sous vide machines required. Each recipe is paired with a how-to video hosted by Chef Danny Smiles where he shares his deep passion and knowledge about the food you’re preparing. Cooking is learning, but it’s never boring.

A connected community is a powerful community.

Local vendors and purveyors are the heartbeat of any vibrant culinary scene. We do everything we can to source ingredients and products from our local network, which includes some of the finest farmers, fishmongers, craftspeople, and suppliers in the country. Sourcing locally also reduces our carbon footprint and creates an independent and self-sustaining business ecosystem. We want to bring you into this community. We want to make you a part of this community.

We work hard to reduce our carbon footprint and food waste while maintaining the highest possible level of taste and quality. Waste/control

We pre-portion and prepare every ingredient with zero waste and nature’s seasons as the guiding principles.

Packaging

Our packaging is made from 100% biodegradable and recyclable materials. If not, we use reusable containers like cotton bags or glass jars, but never, ever any plastic.

Electric vehicles

We make all of our deliveries via bicycle or electric vehicles, producing zero emissions and zero waste.
